Does Pheromone Advantage Work?

In today’s society, beauty is perceived not only as a means to gain favor, but also as a status symbol. If you wish to be famous, respected, and wealthy, then you should be beautiful. There are many ways to gain beauty, but physical attractiveness is the most easily noticed, and most often appreciated. That’s why despite the economic recession, the beauty industry is booming. With new products being produced every day, the beauty industry has sought more ways of increasing its marketability. With the advent of scientific research on pheromones, the beauty industry asked the enigmatic question to the scientific community: “does pheromone advantage work?”

Pheromones have been identified as a necessary tool for attraction between the sexes. It is perceived as a mild scent among animals, but it’s actually a chemical produced by the body in an effort to increase sexual attractiveness. Pheromones have been responsible for fostering sexual reproduction among the species, but its effects have only been observed late into the twentieth century. It was first observed among worms and insects, wherein scientists realized that some factor apart from mere biological instinct was encouraging the animals to mate. In humans, pheromones are present in perspiration, have been extracted from areas such as the armpits and the neck. We go back to the question, “does pheromone advantage work?” Obviously it does, as proven by modern scientific experiments.

There have been many studies regarding the power of pheromones on the human psyche. One of the more notable experiments involved two types of subjects: men who had just come from a basketball game, and men who had just taken a bath. They were exposed to a number of female subjects, who were afterwards interviewed to ascertain their rating of physical attractiveness on the man they talked with. Society normally dictates that men should be well-groomed in order for women to find them attractive. Surprisingly, however, almost all of the women preferred the sweat-drenched man to the well-groomed man. This study raised further questions regarding the role of perspiration in answering the question, “does pheromone advantage work?” Since perspiration transmits not only natural human smell but pheromones as well, pheromones in this study were hypothesized to be the cause of increased sexual attractiveness for men. Pheromones provide the much-needed advantage in the mating game. A man or woman who is infused with pheromones will most likely rise above the rest, and be perceived as beautiful.

Because of these facts, the beauty industry has actively sought ways to include pheromones in beauty products. The scientific community helped produce artificial pheromones which could readily be combined with any scent. The result was that beauty products are now armed with artificial pheromones, causing more men and women to buy them in the hopes of increasing their physical attractiveness. The beauty industry claims that there is no better advantage than having biology on your side- and this is guaranteed by the pheromone phenomenon. So, “does pheromone advantage work?” It does, naturally, but there has been contention with regards to the power of artificial pheromones. While some studies have proven it’s effectively similar to that of the naturally occurring pheromones, other studies have disproved its power. Much still remains to be known regarding the potential of artificial pheromones and their role in enhancing beauty.
